The Queens of the Swahili Seas Exhibition – Nairobi Edition ran from 5th to 31st July 2025 at the Nairobi National Museum, aligning with the month that celebrates International Kiswahili Language Day.

This exhibition spotlighted legendary women from Lamu who lived between the 13th and 19th centuries, women whose names are rarely mentioned in mainstream history, but whose impact was undeniable. Some were renowned poets, others were queens who ruled in Pate and Manda Islands, and some held positions of spiritual leadership in their communities.

Through colourful art and interactive storytelling, the exhibition reimagined their stories in a way that is youthful, fun, and deeply engaging.

The Nairobi edition also featured Swahili objects from museum collections, enriching the experience by connecting the artwork to tangible pieces of cultural heritage.

The turnout was amazing! The gallery came alive with vibrant colours, music, henna, and stunning Swahili flair, a joyful celebration of culture, art, and good vibes.

Guests also got to enjoy fun interactives like our Kiswahili Trivia challenge and a vibrant DIY Lamu Door photobooth, perfect for a playful moment and great snaps!

A heartfelt thank you to our partners, the National Museums of Kenya and the British Council, for their invaluable support in bringing this project to life. Deep gratitude to the Shujaa Stories team and everyone who attended and celebrated with us throughout the month.
