The Queens of the Swahili Seas exhibition was born from a journey that began in April 2023 with a British Council-funded field research project exploring the untold stories of women who shaped the Swahili coast. What better way to bring these narratives to life than through an exhibition, one that found its perfect stage at the 2024 Lamu Cultural Festival.
Making history in its hometown, Lamu, the exhibition debuted at Sisters Gallery, Lamu Town, running from November 28th to 30th, 2024, alongside the festival’s vibrant celebrations. As the first exhibition of its kind, it resonated deeply with visitors, especially women, who saw their histories reflected in the powerful stories on display.

Beyond the gallery walls, the Shujaa Stories team spent an enriching week in Lamu, finally making the long-awaited journey to Pate Island. This visit was especially significant, as many of the featured stories, including the legendary Siyu Fort, are rooted in Pate’s rich history.
