Art Meets Archaeology | Planet Africa Exhibition

About the Exhibition

Shujaa Stories was proud to contribute original visual artworks to the Planet Africa – Archaeological Time Travel exhibition, currently on display at the Nairobi National Museum.

This international collaboration brings together artists and researchers from Kenya, Germany, Mozambique, Eswatini, Ghana, and Morocco, exploring ancient African civilisations through the lenses of archaeology, art, and storytelling.

The Institutions Behind It

Led by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History (MVF) in Berlin, the exhibition aims to reimagine Africa’s past in vibrant, accessible, and contemporary ways. The Kenyan edition was curated under the leadership of Dr Freda Nkirote M’Mbogori — Senior Archaeologist, former Director of the British Institute in Eastern Africa, and current President of the Pan-African Archaeological Association.

Shujaa Stories’ Contribution

Through Shujaa Stories, we contributed a series of illustrations visualising ancient kingdoms of Eastern and Southern Africa, creatively interpreting archaeological findings for broader audiences. The artworks formed part of the immersive storytelling experience designed to connect modern viewers with Africa’s deep historical legacy.

In addition to participating in the Nairobi edition of the exhibition, through our very own Martha Shavuya Galavu representing us, we also had the opportunity to attend the official launch at the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin — joining a diverse group of curators, artists, and scholars in celebrating African heritage on the global stage.
